This will cover a range of techniques for creating and using screens to produce varied images and textures on fabric. We will be making our own printing screens and will then cover several techniques for getting designs on to the screen, breakdown screen printing and printing using thermofax screens. The screens can be used with screenprinting textile inks, thickened dyes, discharge pastes, glues, gutta etc. This is not a fine art style of printing (using registration and layers) but is a very free and easy way of patterning a piece of fabric.

Kaftans are the ultimate in stylish, comfortable garments - ranging from the traditional long flowing gown to a shorter, modern top to wear with trousers or leggings. You will have the opportunity of taking white fabric to a finished kaftan in five days. You will firstly design your own kaftan. You will then dye and print your fabric with me and will then spend two days with Jane making and embellishing the final garment. The garment from start to finish will be 'made by you'.

Natural Forms - five days New!Natural Forms - five days New!
16-20 April 2012 (Mon - Fri)
This is a mixed week using inspiration from nature. We will start with producing cyanotype photograms (blueprints) using flowers, leaves and other natural forms. If you haven’t come across cyanotypes before, have a look at my web site and you will find many examples.

We will then create monoprints using a gelatine plate, again using natural forms for our inspiration. Finally we will use the fabulous technique of breakdown screenprinting using natural forms with other design elements and thickened dyes to create the screens.

Image shows a monoprint from a gelatine plate using a cabbage leaf.

This week will incorporate a variety of techniques for adding and taking away colour and texture. We will look at various ways to dye fabrics using Procion MX and indigo dyes as well as the use of dye paints. We will cover various discharge techniques using bleach, formusol and thiox - these take the colour away from dyed fabric and can be used with a variety of methods of application to give textures and patterns.
